CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

REMIEL

“Why is there a goat in your kitchen?” I asked as I came into view, having grown bored watching Phelan hand-feed the thing a variety of vegetables to try and determine what it liked. As if it actually mattered. It was a goat. They ate everything.

Jumping, Phelan spun to face me with a glare. “Do you ever use a door?”

“No.” My amused smirk disappeared the moment a revolting odor reached my nostrils. It was one I’d recognize anywhere and it wasn’t the fucking goat. “What did you do?” I demanded, stalking across the distance in the time it took Phelan to blink.

“N-nothing!” He backed away from me and darted toward the living room as fast as his feet could carry him. I ran him down like a rabbit, the repulsive smell wafting behind him with each step.

Before he could get too far away, I grabbed his arm and whipped him around again. This close, there was no doubt. Hazael’s stench was everywhere, like a toxic vapor clinging to his clothes, even his skin.

Rage blackened my vision and my fingers tightened on his bicep. “What did he do to you?”

Phelan winced, trying to peel my fingers apart. “You’re hurting me.”

“Tell me!”

His eyes widened. “What are you talking about? Wh—”

“Do not lie to me! I can smell him all over you! What did he do to you, Phelan?”

“Nothing!” His heart hammered inside his chest, tripping over itself when I ripped his shirt open and yanked it off his body in two pieces. “Remiel!”

There were no visible marks on his torso or his arms, but that didn’t mean Hazael didn’t brand him somewhere else. Or do something worse.

Ignoring Phelan’s outrage, I spun him forcefully and scanned his backside, checking along his hairline, down his back to his ass. Finding nothing, I tore his pants off and shoved him face-first onto the couch, despite his continued protests, and checked along his legs.

“Remiel! Stop! Nothing happened!”

He gasped when I ran my hand along his crease and swore viciously as I sank a finger inside of him, searching for any indication Hazael had brutalized him or somehow infected him. There’s no way he had a second encounter with that loathsome beast and walked away unscathed. Not once Hazael knew Phelan belonged to me.

“Goddamn it, Remiel!”

From what I could tell, he felt unharmed, not like he’d been ravaged by anyone or anything. And there were no other sigils to speak of, except my own.

“You don’t have to do this!” Phelan yelled over his shoulder, gritting his teeth and gripping the back of the couch so hard the veins in his forearms popped out. “Would you stop mauling me and fucking talk to me for a second?!”

I granted his last wish and flipped him onto his back, slamming him against the cushions and coming nose-to-nose with him so I could watch his face as he stumbled over each lie. Did Hazael coach him? Tell him what to say? Or maybe he cut out the middleman and decided
